UPDATED NOTICE TO OUR PATIENTS
April 1, 2020
Due to ongoing uncertainty and increasing community spread of the COVD-19 virus, we are not able to safely see patients in our clinic.  Public Health and the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia have mandated that only cases of life threatening infection and/or uncontrollable bleeding be seen at a dental or orthodontic clinic.   This has changed from previous recommendations due to the uncertainty with respect to how this virus is spread.

We are currently in the process of setting up phone and video conference calls with our patients who are in active treatment (ie. braces, aligners, expanders and other appliance that actively move teeth).  All other appointments including New Patient Exams, Recall Exams, and Retainer checks will be cancelled and rescheduled once it is deemed safe to resume regular operation of the clinic.  We have two team members who are working remotely to assist with booking and rescheduling but, unfortunately, our other administrative and clinical staff are not working at this time.  Rest assured, we are all still healthy but are socially distancing ourselves to help the efforts in flattening the curve of this pandemic.

If you have an appointment in the upcoming week you can expect a notification via phone, text or email indicating that your appointment has been cancelled.  Due to the fluidity of the situation, we will be taking all the necessary steps on a week by week basis. If you are in active tooth moving appliances you will be receiving a call from one of our team members.  They will be checking in on your care and will offer appointment times for phone or video calls from Dr. Kersey or Dr. Tran. These calls will allow us to assess your current progress and help keep your treatment on track, as much as possible. The doctors may also recommend changes with respect to any appliances such as elastics.   We understand that this is less than ideal, but with the ever dynamic situation this allows us to keep a safe distance while working with you to manage issues that may arise on an ongoing basis.

If you are experiencing an orthodontic emergency that requires immediate attention, you may contact the office at 250-542-4118 and an emergency contact number will be available.  Please also visit our website, kerseyorthodontics.com, for addition information on the closure and emergency procedures and appointments.

The health and well-being of our patients, staff, and community are of the utmost importance to us.  Please make every effort to stay healthy and safe.  If we are all diligent at this crucial time with protective health and social distancing measures, hopefully we can slow the transmission of the virus and reduce our risk going forward.

What should I do while I am in treatment?

We understand that this is an inconvenience for all involved and a major concern for the impact this delay will have on you or your loved one's treatment.  With proper oral hygiene, regular brushing and flossing, and following the instructions below, there is minimal risk of any significant harm with a prolonged delay.  These instructions apply to all active treatment including traditional fixed braces, Invisalign clear aligners, palatal expander appliances, Powerscope springs and headgears.

- Maintain excellent oral hygiene, including brushing after meals and flossing at least once per day
- If maintenance of oral hygiene is a concern, consider supplementing with a fluoride rinse which can be purchased at any pharmacy
- Avoid excessive consumption of high sugar foods and drinks
- For those instructed to wear elastics with the braces or Invisalign clear aligners, move to wearing elastics at NIGHT-TIME ONLY until your next visit
- For those instructed to wear headgear appliances, please continue to wear on evenings and nights
- For those with a palatal expander, please STOP ALL TURNS until your next visit
- If you have a permanent retainer that breaks and you also have a removable retainer, please wear the removable retainer every night until we resume regular operation of the clinic and can assess you to repair the permanent retainer.

- For those undergoing Invisalign clear aligner treatment, please MOVE TO CHANGING YOUR ALIGNERS EVERY 2 WEEKS until further notice.  If you are on your last aligner, please stay in that aligner.  If that aligner is getting excessively stained, then you may purchase cleaning tablets from your local pharmacy.

If you are experiencing an orthodontic emergency that requires immediate attention, you may contact the office at 250-542-4118 and an emergency contact number will be available.  Please refrain from coming to the clinic without a confirmed emergency appointment.  While we can appreciate a loose bracket or retainer wire can be worrisome, in many cases it does not constitute an emergency and can be addressed at your next regular visit.  If you or your child is experiencing bleeding, severe pain, or infection, please contact us for further instructions.

We appreciate that this is an unexpected frustrating situation for all involved.  We certainly understand that this closure may delay your orthodontic treatment and we want to assure you that we will do our best to complete your treatment as efficiently as possible as soon as we are able to resume normal operations.

We are truly sorry for an inconvenience this may cause but our primary concern is the health and safety of you, our team, and our community as whole.  In response to this global pandemic, it is the responsibility of every individual to assist in stopping the spread of the virus and these steps are a necessary mean of doing so.

Thank you again with the utmost sincerity for your understanding and cooperation.
